We work with families with children all over the United Kingdom that suffer
With only 5% of advocacy service working with disabled children and young people (
The problems faced by families with disabled children are clear. Current statistics (Report published by Child Poverty Action Group, Out of Reach: Benefits for disabled Children) indicate that in the UK there are 770,000 disabled children under 16. Incomes in such households are likely to be low because families experience considerable additional costs, face multiple barriers to employment, and experience problems accessing disability benefits.
Although disability living allowance (DLA) lifts many families out of poverty, the lack of information about DLA, the arduous nature of claiming and reassessments, and the stigma associated with being on benefits all create problems for a family.
'It is our mission to give choice, opportunity, professional advice and support to children affected by disability so that they can live the lives they want to live.'
Usually beneficiaries are referred to us from a Local authority's, children with disabilities team, Paediatric Occupational Therapists and a number of families self refer via our website. We have also assisted children staying at Great Ormond Street Hospital, Guys & St. Thomas's Hospital, St. Mary's Imperial College and Queen's Hospital and many others.
The children and families that we have come into contact with are a diverse social group all with different needs. Families that we have helped have experienced problems from GP diagnosis, housing adaptations, evictions, lack of social activities, school equipment, medical equipment and financial hardship.
